Globe Telecom has announced that it has introduced the first “Infrastructure as a Service” (IaaS) offering to local businesses as part of its cloud services..

From left to right: ASTI president Anthony Lau, Sandz managing director Enrique Velasco, and Globe Business head Jesus Romero.

Delivered through the Globe Business unit, the company said the new cloud service represents the next phase of its communications offerings intended for customers whose telco needs continue to evolve. With IaaS, enterprises can have access to the latest technologies without the costs of purchasing and maintaining hardware. Since the equipment is outsourced to a virtual environment, customers can get network access and solutions on-demand and pay only for what they use. Whether it is storage, back-up, hardware, servers or network components, these resources can be provisioned fast and can be suited to specific needs of businesses. In addition, among the many advantages of IaaS are its relatively quick setup time and high availability.

Globe Business’ suite of IaaS solutions includes Backup as a Service, Storage as a Service and Compute as a Service. All these are hosted at the Globe Data Center (GDC), an ISO-certified facility. Globe’s first IaaS offering, Backup as a Service, was launched last June 16. The service allows users to backup and restore critical data to and from the GDC, using backup/restoration software. Similarly, Compute as a Service will allow enterprises to acquire processing power without the cost of purchasing additional servers. Server “instances” or virtual machines are available for customers to load with their choice of OS and applications. Storage as a Service, on the other hand, will enable customers to upload and download data to and from an off-site or Web-enabled data server, or a data repository for Web-based applications.
Globe IaaS can be used in various enterprise-grade applications. For instance, IaaS can be employed to run large-scale operations such as that of a national election. Instead of purchasing physical servers then worrying about their subsequent disposal, the government can utilize the on-demand capability of cloud computing to manage and streamline their operations during the elections. Globe has partnered with local tech firm Sandz Philippines and Ayala Systems Technology Inc. (ASTI), to bring IaaS to enterprise customers.

August 3, 2009 – Monday

VIRTUALIZATION and cloud computing may be the rage across the IT infrastructures of various companies and organizations, but EMC Corp. warns that proper tools are essential to effectively manage these environments.
In a meeting with the IT press, chief technical architect of EMC South Asia, Sal Fernando, stressed the importance of unparalleled insight and control over virtual IT infrastructures. “In a fast changing world today, people are virtualizing their environments – abstracting the physical IT, which is a very good way to reduce infrastructure, improve service levels and secure environment,” he began.
“If you are unable to manage these environments, virtualization falls apart. When it breaks, virtualization is a nightmare because you do not know what’s wrong or where it has gone wrong,” Fernando continued. “Without the management tools, you lose control of the relatively straightforward physical environment,” he added.
To help customers avoid this dilemma, EMC has come up with the Ionix IT management software, which Fernando called as a “revolutionary EMC concept.”

New business software
Business World – Corporate News – 8/S1
July 31-August 1, 2009 – Friday-Saturday

LEADING INFORMATION technology (IT) infrastructure provider EMC Corp. yesterday launched its new “Ionix” solutions to help business improve services while reducing costs and risks in their operations. Ionix offers “service discovery and mapping” so a company will be able to qualify and quantify its resources without additional work force, thereby utilizing resources efficiently. The software also provides “IT operations intelligence” that will monitor services across both physical and virtual environments as well as data center automation and compliance that will enable companies to scale their virtualized data center without increasing staff. “EMC’s Ionix will reduce a company’s expenditures fro additional servers or other IT infrastructures will also proved a secure environment,” Sal Fernando, EMC South Asia’s chief technical architect, told reporters yesterday. In an increasingly “virtualizing” world, companies face the challenge of keeping hold of its resources, both hardware and work force, he said. “If you don’t have the management tools, you will lose control of the virtualized environment,” he added.
